Fête des Voisins

On Saturday night our little village celebrated the summer solstice with a fête des voisns. All the neighbors of the village came together in the square for a pot luck supper & an evening of fun. The little invitation that was hand delivered to each resident of the village said bring your chair, a dish to share, something to drink & your good humor. In France  apparently a pot luck dinner is called an "auberge d' espagnol".

Well needless to say there was plenty of good food & drink as well as plenty of good humor to go around!
It was a lovely evening where neighbors met neighbors & shared in the bounty of summer.

As seems to always be the case in France this was a fête that embraced all generations from the very young to all the respected older residents.

We had a beautiful night for it & it could not have been a lovelier way to welcome the first day of summer.

I hope you were able to celebrated the  summer solstice with good neighbors, good food & most of all good humor.

I am linking up with Paulita's weekly meme Dreaming of France today. Check out what other readers are thinking about France here.

  1. Oh what a wonderful event. I really love the seasonality of celebrations in France, they rejoice and celebrate the passage of the seasons in a way that we really should emulate.

  2. This looks like a marvelous time. What did you take to share? Were you nervous about sharing American-made food with your French neighbors? I can't believe even the teenagers showed up. That's amazing.
Thanks for playing along today with Dreaming of France. Here’s my Dreaming of France meme

    1. Children & teenagers are so polite & sweet in France. They always participate in adult activities. They come right up to you & give you the two kisses & say bonjour. So sweet. I made a big pasta salad which I have made before. It is very different for the French & they all seem to like it. I have made it a few times before for such occasions with positive results. So no I do not feel nervous. My neighbors like trying American things.

  4. I love the idea of this, a bit like an American block party but village wide. In real life, I actually shy away from this kind of activity; what do the introverted types do in France? It seems so very social there?!
BTW, I'll probably share more of your Hundred-Foot Journey photos next Dreaming of France; today I have news about the French composer Alexandre Desplat.
    Enjoy your beautiful French summer:)

  7. What a wonderful night you had! I love it when neighbors just meet to share good food and lots of fun - the more the merrier :) We did that in my childhood here in Germany, too - meeting for BBQs with all neighbors, all generations together having a fabulous time. Those times are the best. So happy you got to celebrate summer solstice so wonderfully :)

  9. This looks like such fun! Must more jolly than our solstice this year -- it was supposed to be the longest day of the year but the sky was so cloudy, it didn't seem any longer (and even less so) than normal! We were at the quiet and calm of the lake house. Very different, both lovely.
