I couldn't portray a woman in all her natural loveliness...
I haven't the skill. No one has. I must, therefore, create a new sort of beauty...
George Braque
This is only the second time I have participated in The Drawing Challenge & I confess to being a little taken aback by this weeks theme, Nude. It has been a long time since I have done any figures & like the Braque quote I often feel inadequate. It reminded me of those long ago days in art school working from a live model.
I took this theme as a real drawing challenge. I went up into my attic studio & got to work. I photographed older pieces I had up there & began a series of quick sketches & ink drawings. It was fun. I had forgotten the pleasure of drawing the human form.
Although I did not produce any works that I felt particularly good about, it was the process that was the pleasure. So thanks Patrice for the theme, the challenge & the inspiration.
Go to Patrice A to see the other participants.
Beautiful Sally. I will have to dig my drawings out to show you one day.
ReplyDeleteI hope you are enjoying the best Saturday.

I enjoyed life drawing classes at college - and wish I had had the time to myself for the same experience you have enjoyed with this theme :)
ReplyDeleteit is something i did not ever enjoy, too restless for live drawing, which says alot about me, frankly. i wonder if i would like it better nowadays, if i tried...
ReplyDeletei am so happy for you the process uplifted you. i am quite surprised by all different media you got into! n♥
The snippets of your studio looks so refreshing and serene! It looks like such a creative, peaceful space!!! I have much admiration for your beautiful collage of the various 'human form!' I find it such a challenge to photograph individuals (getting in a person's space), I can only imagine drawing a nude individual, especially for the first time.
ReplyDeleteHello Sally, it's nice to meet you through the drawing challenge. You are too hard on yourself, each of your pieces speak of the beauty of the human form. Thanks for the peek into your studio. Until the next challenge......
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
Amazing studio and your sketches are beautiful. I especially love the way you presented them.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful how it brought you back to draw. And I love the results: the process and the pleasure of drawing.
ReplyDeleteYou made me think...
Nicely done, Sally. These sketches are beautiful and make me want to see more. -sus
ReplyDeleteHi Sally, nice to meet you! Thank you for showing the process! I love the soft and delicate touch in your art work:) Leena
ReplyDeleteSo True Sally- it is always the process- the inner act and the glimpses you've shown us are really lovely- they remind me of Bonnard (a Frenchman right) the light airy way you have with your materials- I hope this inspires you to play more- I know I would love to see more :)
ReplyDeletehow wonderful that you were inspired to do something you have not done for a long time. I have never had a model, i will try that sometime.... loved seeing your glimpses.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to try something that you haven't for a while. They look terrific to me. Why does nude automatically mean woman?
ReplyDeleteOh your studio Sally!!! Oh. Oh. Oh. Luscious space to work in I can only imagine!! I love your work to bits. All of it. Old from what I can see of it, and the new as well. The very last drawing contains lines that make me swoon. Love it all. Nice to meet you! *smiles* Norma
ReplyDeleteHi Sally, I feel good about all your pieces! I remember the live model drawing times. Ugh I've always been pretty poor at portraits (I think). But I completely agree with you that getting up into the studio and having a play is the most satisfying thing in the world. Keep going with some of them. That's what I would do. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I love your compilation of nude details, what a variety! I totally like the way you intersperse with lively colours, even in your studio, which has such a beautiful mediterranean look!
ReplyDeleteI really have to get back to drawing. I suspect I would be more like Braque in achievement or honesty. You, however, have such a gift -- I love them all!
ReplyDeleteDear Sally I would say there is now need to find any excuses for not being good enough for me it looks wonderful, all this different ways to play around with the theme and the material and as well how you displayed everything, totally awesome. Braques quote is great!

Hi, Sally, I liked the Braque phrase!
ReplyDeleteI liked the paintings and drawings that I saw here, I guess it are yours. and liked to read: It was the process that was pleasure. That's my attitude, that helps me to work without fear, and without pressure. I only think of fun in the process. regardless of the outcome!!!
