Finishing Up the Sketchbook
I mailed off the little sketchbook today, late but finished. Here are some of the last entries.
More Windows
People take a great deal of pride in their windows. Regardless, that the shutters may be in need of a coat of paint, lovely flowers adorn & beautify.
There is a simple elegance in this age old tradition of putting plants & flowers in the window.
Carpenters have become adept at placing new window casings in old frames. This 15th century house is one of the oldest surviving buildings constructed with wood & turf rather than stone. The historic facade is preserved & new windows have been installed to adapt to modern life.
Bright 20 th century colors can also give a splash of modernity to old exteriors.
But some prefer to leave the exterior walls as they are, concentrating more on what is within.
I love how this building is constructed on a slant & how cleverly the folding shutter is made to fit the arched window.
Where ever you go, you are bond to see someone at work washing their windows. There seems to be a great sense of pride taken, in keeping these beautiful old windows sparkling.

Sketchbook 3
One thing you learn doing a daily sketchbook like this is that everyday is different.
It's hard to explain. Your sketch tells a lot about how you are feeling on any given day.
And about, who, indeed you are. I most have a million different personalities.
Sometimes I am silly & cartoonish, & others more serious & art minded.
Still others I am caught between, not really one or the other.
I guess I just have to accept what comes & let it be.

Sunflowers
The sunflowers have started to bloom. They are always a beautiful
sight, but especially in the early morning mist.
Bon Fête du Quatorze Juillet !!
Oops! I did not make it into town to post this on the 14th. I hope everyone, who celebrated Bastille Day, both in France & in the states, had a wonderful time. Here in the countryside it is really just a day to relax & not work. I have been in Paris a number of times & seen the spectacular fireworks with the Eiffel Tower & the Seine as a backdrop. It is truly magnificent!
But in the campagne the 14th of July is a day of tranquility. People might pack a picnic & go fishing, but mostly they just put their feet up & enjoy the fruits of their labor.
The riot of color from the fields of sunflowers provides the fireworks.

Windows
Here is another installment of photos from my one afternoon in St. Antonin. These are just a small assortment of the many different styles of windows that can be found in a village dating back to the middle ages & beyond.
From the humble to the stately.
You can find every type of construction.
The old timber framing creates the most interesting of patterns.
One can not help but love the elegant beauty in these crumbling walls.
And at the same time, it is hard not to wonder who once lived here. Who flung opened these windows & looked out onto the street below, so many years ago?
